Swimming

Swimming

Swimming is an age-old sport that can be practiced in any body of water and is characterized by a series of movements used to move gracefully across the surface of the water. Swimming can be practiced at a competitive level, in all of its events, as well as an amateur level, seeing as it is a very “pleasant and effective” activity for both the body and the mind.

Swimming is recommended for everyone as it does not cause injuries from overuse, and it is particularly suitable for those with functional rehabilitation problems or for those with weight problems (overweight, back problems).

The first rules and swimming styles were established during the current century. A competition pool is 50m long, 21m wide and 1.80m deep. The four major strokes are: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. In addition to these four styles which are swum in various distances (50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m), in competition swimming there are also other races that combine the four styles: the relay, the individual medley and the medley relay, all at the same distances. There are also 5km events that usually take place in open water.
